Heartbleed Bug SampleBy now you’ve most likely heard of the new online security bug called “Heartbleed” that had major websites scrambling over the last week looking for fixes. This bug is mainly an issue with servers and software using OpenSSL. OpenSSL is code that is widely used by websites to keep the Internet safe from eavesdropping.

Basically, an attacker could “listen in” to communications between your computer and those websites. The bug allowed information that is usually encrypted, such as usernames and passwords, credit card numbers and personal address information, to become decrypted.

Oasis was not affected by this bug.  Our website and database run on servers that do not include OpenSSL. Our other systems and software that do utilize OpenSSL have been patched by the manufacturers and are protected from this vulnerability.

If you are concerned that a website you visit may be affected by this security bug, you can check its status at https://lastpass.com/heartbleed. The site will allow you to enter the web address of the site in question and will alert you to any security concerns.

If you use online services with a merchant or other organization check to see if they have released a statement about the Heartbleed bug or contact them directly via telephone. If you have concerns, or if they were affected, take steps to change your username and password for that service. For help with an outside organization or vendor on this issue, contact their customer service directly.

Even though Oasis services were not affected, MyOasis users can always update their contact information, including username and password directly on our website. Go to www.oasisnet.org and sign in to your account. On the top right corner of the page, click the My Profile link. Here you can update your personal information. Be sure to click Save when done.
